About Us

Eastern Michigan University’s Academic Programs Abroad offers a variety of study abroad programs including cultural history programs, travel and study programs, direct exchanges, intensive language and programs offered over winter break and during summer. Most programs are open to students from any college or university and EMU students can apply financial aid awards toward the programs. We also provide advising and information about study abroad opportunities available through other universities, work or volunteer opportunities abroad and budget travel.

Staff

Stephen Burwood | Director of International Programs
Stephen Burwood, Ph.D. is the director of international programs. He was raised in Exeter, England and earned a bachelor in European history from University of Warwick, England. He also holds a postgraduate certificate in education from University of Sussex, England and a master’s and doctorate in U.S. history from Binghamton University. Previously, he was director of the James M. Clark Center for International Education at the State University of New York College at Cortland. He reads French fluently and has also studied Italian, Russian and Hebrew.

Jeremy Baldwin | Program Coordinator
Jeremy Baldwin coordinates, directs and manages programs. He began working as a program coordinator, both managing and directing cultural history programs in ‘98. As a student, he went on the European Cultural History Program in ‘93 and Asia Cultural History Program in ‘96. He has traveled extensively in Europe, Asia and Africa and holds bachelor’s in political science from Loyola University in Chicago.

Anne Barthel | Program Coordinator
Anne Barthel manages semester and year-long programs. She previously worked in study abroad at the University of North Dakota, where she had earned a bachelor's in anthropology and Native American studies and spent a semester abroad in Quebec, Canada. She received a master's in linguistics from the University of Manchester (UK) and taught English in France and Chile.

Benita Goldman | Program Coordinator
Benita Goldman directs and teaches programs abroad, as well as coordinates programs, outreach and media. She has traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Middle East and Asia and taught programs abroad since ‘92. She previously served as a faculty member in the Art Department at Missouri Southern in Joplin. She holds an M.F.A. in Painting from EMU and studied drawing and color theory at Yale University. She has been the recipient of two Michigan Arts Council Grants, an Atlantic Center for the Arts Fellowship, a number of art awards and a scholarship from Yale University.

Cheryl Guerra | Senior Secretary
Since ‘96, Cheryl Guerra has been the senior secretary of APA. She fulfills administrative duties of the office and co-ordinates APA programs with other campus offices, including registration and billing. She has worked for EMU since ‘85, previously working in the Education Center at Chrysler Corporation.

Gordon Knutson, Ph.D.| Director, Cultural History Programs
Gordon Knutson has been directing and teaching history and political science for the Cultural History Programs since ‘84. He was the director of cultural history programs from ‘90–‘03. He has traveled extensively throughout Europe and Asia and lived in China. He developed the Asian Cultural History Program as the Asian complement to the European Cultural History Program. He previously taught history and political science at Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio, and received his doctorate in history from the University of Kansas.
