Financial Aid and Scholarships

Provided you attend an approved study abroad program and meet all the eligibility requirements, you can take advantage of a wide array of state, federal, EMU institutional and private aid. The entire cost of a program, including transportation, tuition, fees and living expenses, is taken into account when determining financial need. Your award is adjusted according to the actual cost of the program. The types of aid available vary.

If you are attending an EMU program, the credit will appear on your transcript as regular EMU credit. All faculty-led programs and Direct Exchanges are EMU programs. In the case of third-party provider programs (such as CIEE), the credit comes back on your EMU transcript as transfer credit. If the third party-provider program you attend is approved for credit in advance, and if the sponsor is an accredited Title IV institution, you may be eligible for state and federal financial aid. The aid is transferred through a "consortium agreement." A consortium agreement is a form provided by the EMU Office of Financial Aid. The sponsor of the program you wish to attend must fill in the program cost blanks and return the consortium agreement, signed by an authorized individual, to the EMU Office of Financial Aid.

All EMU faculty-led programs are EMU credit-bearing. EMU faculty-led Winter Break programs become part of your Winter Semester, are eligible for financial aid, and scholarship funds toward regular semester tuition may be used.

Visit the Office of Financial Aid Web site.

Financial Aid for non-EMU students:
If you’re not currently enrolled at EMU, apply for financial aid at your home institution. EMU does not award financial aid to non-EMU students. We can work with your study abroad or financial aid advisor to provide cost breakdowns for EMU programs or advice.

Special Situations

  • Summer Study Abroad Programs require a separate financial aid application, which is available mid-February. Summer aid is first-come first-served, and students should complete and return the forms the same day.
  • If you're attending a Winter Break program and were awarded before winter recess in December, you’ll need to save a portion of your refund check to pay for your Study Abroad Program.
  • You're responsible for purchasing your plane ticket in advance. Do not wait for a financial aid refund. Students accepted to a Study Abroad Program will receive flight information and advice on securing discount flights.
