Civil War Battlefield Tour - Travel Course

History 360 (CRN 32862), 479 (CRN 32911), 592 (CRN 32899) (3 credits)

  • Visit key Civil War sites on a seven-day bus tour with fellow EMU students
  • Earn three graduate or undergraduate credits in an accelerated, one-week format
  • Study the history of the war and key battles from the soldiers’ perspectives

The Course
Read a welcome letter from Professor Ramold. In this travel course, you’ll visit five major battlefields and small engagement sites of the eastern theater of the Civil War. You’ll study the war from the soldier’s perspective with tours and discussions that emphasize how individual soldiers and small unit action led to an army’s success or failure. Besides visiting the actual sites of the conflict, you’ll study primary documents written by Civil War participants.

The Tour
Major stops include historic Civil War locations in Gettysburg, Penn.; Hagerstown, Md.; Washington, D.C. and Richmond, Petersburg, Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania, Va.

Cost
Three credit hours tuition and fees
Program fee: $980, which includes:

  • Charter tour bus service
  • Lodging (double occupancy)
  • Admissions costs for daily excursions
  • Some meals

The tour begins and ends in Ypsilanti, Mich. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from EMU.
