Why become a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional?
The public is looking for a planner who has demonstrated a commitment to competency, and financial professionals want an established certification that sets them apart in a globally expanding financial planning profession. CFP Board research shows consumers increasingly rely on credentials when selecting a financial adviser. The CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ and certification marks are the most recognized financial planning marks in the world. With CFP® certification, your expertise and credibility as a financial planner is instantly communicated. Only a select group of planners have met the rigorous education, examination, experience and ethics requirements necessary to call themselves CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professionals or CFP® practitioners.
The Eastern Michigan University College of Business Program
The Eastern Michigan University Financial Planning Certificate Program is a non-credit program that fulfills a growing demand among financial planning professionals for the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ or CFP® certification. Those who successfully complete this CFP Board-Registered Program will be qualified to sit for the CFP® Certification Examination.
The EMU Financial Planning Certificate Program consists of six noncredit courses that cover principles of financial planning including insurance, investments, retirement, personal income tax, and estate planning. All of the courses in the program follow guidelines established by Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. Texts are selected from the bibliography provided by Certified Financial Planner Boards of Standards Inc.
Your career as a CFP® professional
Your career in financial planning will be filled with opportunities and challenges. Many Americans are now responsible for their own financial future and are looking to professional advisers for assistance. The public is often confused about how to select a financial planner.
As increasing numbers of people in financial services call themselves "financial advisers", financial planning professionals need a way to differentiate themselves and demonstrate quickly that they are competent and capable. That differentiator is the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification awarded by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc., and 68,000 professionals around the world already set themselves apart in this meaningful way.
Whether you are already a financial planner or have recently decided to enter the profession, going the extra step and obtaining CFP® certification will identify you as a true professional in one of the fastest growing and exciting careers today. CFP Board research shows that clients of CFP® practitioners are more satisfied than the clients of other financial advisers and are interested in a broader range of financial advice. CFP® practitioners often become involved with many aspects of their clients’ lives and help multiple generations of the same family. Most CFP® practitioners use a comprehensive approach to problem solving and communication that better prepares them to meet and anticipate client needs. Because CFP® practitioners make recommendations based on their clients’ needs, the typical client relationship for a CFP® practitioner lasts many years.
CFP Certification
For complete information about the CFP® certification see the Web site www.cfp.net or call 800.487.1497. Before applying for the CFP® Certification Examination, you need to complete the education requirements set by the CFP Board. You can fulfill the education requirement by completing a CFP Board registered education program, apply for challenge status, or request a transcript review. The CFP® Certification Examination tests your ability to apply your financial planning knowledge to client situations. The exam is administered three times a year — generally on the third Friday and Saturday of March, July and November — at about 50 domestic locations. The application deadline is approximately seven weeks prior to each exam date (e.g., Feb. 1, Jun. 1 and Oct. 1). You must also meet the experience requirement of at least three years of qualifying full-time work experience, adhere to the code of ethics and professional responsibility, and pass a background check.
Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. owns the marks CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ which it awards to individuals who successfully complete initial and ongoing certification requirements.
Eastern Michigan University does not certify individuals to use the CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ and certification marks. CFP® certification is granted only by Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. to those persons who, in addition to completing an educational requirement such as this CFP Board-Registered Program, have met its ethics, experience, and examination requirements.
