Master of Arts in Counseling

Eastern Michigan University’s Master of Arts in Counseling is offered through the Department of Leadership and Counseling. This professional practitioner program is intended for students who seek licensure as professional counselors. Candidates selected for this program are expected to make a major commitment to their graduate level training and education as well as enroll in course work on a regular basis. The program includes a 600 clock-hour supervised counseling internship experience.

The basic counseling core and the counseling internship courses are all offered at EMU–Flint. Other specialization courses and practicum are available on main campus including specialties in clinical mental health, K–12 school and college counseling.

Career Opportunities
This program provides competencies and credentials required for positions in community agencies, colleges and schools. Counseling graduates provide individual, group and family counseling in a variety of settings, including public and private agencies such as mental health clinics, substance abuse treatment facilities, hospitals, domestic violence and rape crisis centers as well as colleges, universities and K–12 schools.

Accreditation
The EMU College of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and approved by the Michigan Department of Education for the preparation of educational personnel. The counseling program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), a national, specialized accrediting body that evaluates and grants accreditation to graduate level programs in professional counseling. The program meets the academic and internship requirements for limited licensure as a professional counselor (LLPC) in the State of Michigan. Information on full licensure as a professional counselor is available in the Student Handbook for Counseling Programs.

It is strongly recommended that students take elective course work in substance abuse counseling, couple and family counseling and grant/proposal writing. In addition, students who have not had course work in psychology (i.e. abnormal psychology, theories of personality, etc.) will be encouraged to do so. The student and his/her advisor will carefully review the student’s education and experience in planning the program of study.
