Master of Arts in Educational Media and Technology (EDMT)

The mission of the Master of Arts in Educational Media and Technology program is to prepare professionals who are capable of facilitating student learning in a variety of settings. The program, largely offered online, is designed to provide students with both the knowledge base and the application skills that are required to use technology effectively in education. Focusing on the design, development, utilization, management and evaluation of instructional systems moves us toward achieving this mission.

Career Opportunities
The master's in educational media and technology program focuses on the professional and effective use of technology in the classroom by educators, including administrators. Students who complete this program will be able to:
  • Provide a rationale for using technology in the educational process;
  • Identify contributions of major leaders in the field of educational media technology and instructional theory, and the effect of each leader on the field;
  • Assess current trends in the area of educational media technology and relate the trends to past events and future implications;
  • Integrate technology into instructional programs;
  • Teach the operation and various uses of educational technology in instruction;
  • Act as consultants/facilitators in educational media technology;
  • Design and develop instructional products to meet specified needs; and
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of instructional materials and systems.

Accreditation
The EMU College of Education is accredited the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and approved by the Michigan Department of Education for the preparation of educational personnel.

After completing the master’s in educational media and technology, Michigan teachers are already certified can apply for the educational technology endorsement.

Number of Credits

  • 23 credit hours of EDMT courses which are offered online with opportunities for students to meet face-to-face as needed;
  • 6 credit hours of education foundation courses, most of which are offered online; CURR 655 and SOFD 572 being the exceptions;
  • 3 credit hours of research courses.

  • EDMT 602 Technology and Student-Centered Learning (3); Prerequisites: Baccalaureate degree
  • EDMT 603 Technology Enhanced Learning Environments (3); Prerequisites: EDMT 602
  • EDMT 623 Instructional Design and Development of Multimedia Instructional Materials (3); Prerequisites: EDMT 602 and EDMT 603
  • EDMT 628 The Use and Design of Online Resources for Educators (3); Prerequisites: EDMT 602 and EDMT 603 or EDMT 618
  • EDMT 627 Advanced Technical Issues in Educational Technology (3); Prerequisites: EDMT 602 and EDMT 603
  • EDMT 632 Advanced Productivity Tools in Teaching and Learning (2); Prerequisites: Baccalaureate degree
  • EDMT 653 Issues and Emerging Educational Technologies (3); Prerequisites: EDMT 602, EDMT 603, EDMT 628, EDMT 623 or a minimum of 12 graduate credits in EDMT 
Capstone Course and Project: three credit hours
  • EDMT 695 Seminar in Educational Technology (3); Prerequisites: Admission to the EDMT master's program, completion of foundations courses and required EDMT core courses (excluding EDMT694/695). This course is only for students who intend to do their EDMT culminating project.

Foundations Courses: four–five credit hours
One of the following:

  • EDPS 602 Psychology of the Adult Learner (2)
  • EDPS 603 Principles of Classroom Learning (2)

One of the following:

  • CURR 655 Curriculum Foundations (3)
  • SOFD 572 History of Education (3)
  • SOFD 580 Sociology of Education (2)

Research Course: three credit hours
One of the following:

  • EDPS 677 Ed Research: Quantitative Methods (3)
  • EDPS 687 Ed Research: Qualitative Methods (3)
  • EDPS 667 Ed Research: Principles of Ed Research (3)

Advising
An EDMT faculty member will work with you to assist in the exploration of degree requirements, evaluation of applications for admission to a degree program, preparation of a plan of study, approval of program changes, and recommendation for graduation. Admission

  • Comply with the Graduate School's admission requirements.
  • Hold a 2.75 undergraduate GPA or 3.0 in the last half of the undergraduate work or 3.3 GPA in 12 hours or more of work at the graduate level or a minimum 50th percentile on the GRE writing. International students must have a minimum score of 550 on the TOEFL.
  • Furnish transcripts from all colleges attended.
  • Furnish an analysis of professional goals written by the candidate. This analysis should include a description of how the chosen degree program will help meeting the selected goals and how the candidate's life experiences, accomplishments and interests will contribute to his or her success in the program; and
  • Request and have submitted two letters of recommendation that address the candidate’s professional commitment, experience and potential.
The transcripts, analysis of goals and letters of recommendation should give evidence of potential for graduate-level scholarship.

EMU tuition rates are an excellent value and are very competitive with other institutions. Total cost of an online course includes tuition, university and online fees, which may vary and can be found on the Web site.

Do I need to be a "Techie"?
No, but you should review the technical requirements before enrolling.
