Graduate Certificate in Historic Preservation

Eastern Michigan University's historic preservation program is one of the largest and most comprehensive in the country, concentrating on career development in historic preservation planning; heritage interpretation, tourism, and administration; and conservation and technology. The five-course certificate can involve electives from each of these areas of study.

The American Association of State and Local History has recognized the program with its coveted "Certificate of Commendation" for nationally recognized performance within the field of historic preservation education, as has the Michigan Historic Preservation Network and Preservation Wayne. Graduates of the program have obtained positions with the National Park Service; the National Trust for Historic Preservation; many State Historic Preservation Offices; the Frank Lloyd Wright Home & Studio; the New York City Landmarks Commission; multiple private consulting and architectural firms; municipal planning, DDA and Main Street offices; and numerous statewide preservation organizations including those in Delaware, Hawaii, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Oklahoma and Utah, among others. In 2004-05, the program celebrated its 25th anniversary.

Career Opportunities
The certificate program is designed to meet the needs of individuals looking for career enhancement or who are in career transition—especially those currently working in architectural firms; federal, state and local planning/ development agencies; consultant and land use planning firms; park and recreational agencies; historic museums and societies; and in heritage tourism. The certificate can stand alone as a means of updating knowledge or redirecting a career. It can also apply toward the full masters degree program.
