The School of Nursing offers the following graduate opportunities:
- Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Adult Health Nursing
(40–44 credits)with an option to take additional clinical hours and an advanced pharmacology course to be eligible to take the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) certification examination (four additional credits).
- Two post-baccalaureate certificate programs:
- Teaching in Health Care Systems (12 credits)
- Quality Improvement in Health Care (12 credits)
- Combining the MSN with a certificate (requires two separate applications and separate fees).

- Teaching in Health Care Systems Concentration
This 12 credit hour concentration assists the student in developing skills in curriculum development, teaching strategies and curriculum evaluation. The courses can also lead to a certificate in teaching in health care systems with a separate application. - Quality Improvement in Health Care
This 12 credit hour concentration assists students in developing skills in quality improvement with emphasis on outcome measurement and process improvement. This concentration is designed for nurses, performance improvement coordinators, risk management personnel, education coordinators and managers and staff in health care facilities. The courses can also lead to a graduate certificate in continuous quality improvement with a separate application. - Gerontology
This 13 credit hour concentration is designed as a collaboration between the School of Nursing and the Interdisciplinary Gerontology program to promote advanced knowledge and care to elderly clients.
- 60 credits for nursing major
- 23 nursing credits required at EMU
- 37 credit hours from previous nursing program
- 64 credits general education and support courses which may be transfered in to EMU
124 credit hours to graduate (30 must be from EMU)
Program of Study
This program is
designed for nurses to gain advanced practice skills, knowledge of
health care systems and advanced research skills. Students select one
role concentration from a course sequence in teaching in health care
systems, quality improvement (QI) in health care or gerontology.
The program includes:
- Five courses (15 credits) in the adult health core (including three courses with practicum hours)
- Four courses (10-12 credits) in the theory and research core
- Four courses (12-13 credits) in the role concentration
- One graduate elective (3-4 credits)
An additional two courses (4 credits) are optional for students seeking eligibility for CNS certification. Students will work with master’s prepared preceptors in health care agencies and settings related to their interests. Courses are currently held in the evening, one night a week.

Accreditation
