Master of Arts in Reading

The Master of Arts in Reading provides a strong theoretical foundation in the field of reading and literacy, as well as skills to address the needs of K–12 learners, particularly those who require specialized literacy intervention. Gain knowledge of a wide range of instructional and assessment policies, programs, practices and resources supporting literacy development. Design literacy environments engaging learners in inquiry, research and communication, using print and online texts and new as well as emerging technologies. Finally, attain expertise to work successfully in culturally and linguistically diverse K–12 settings.

Career Opportunities
The Master of Arts in Reading leads to the Reading Specialist (BR), a K-12 endorsement from the State of Michigan. Students must complete all required courses in the program and successfully pass the Michigan State Endorsement Test (#92) to gain the endorsement as a Reading Specialist. The Master of Arts in Reading and the State of Michigan endorsement as a K-12 Reading Specialist can lead to a position as building or district literacy curriculum/reading specialist, literacy coach, or reading teacher for struggling readers.

Accreditation
The EMU College of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and approved by the Michigan Department of Education for the preparation of educational personnel and is nationally recognized by the International Reading Association.

Program Offerings
The master’s in reading is offered on the main campus and EMU–Monroe and EMU–Brighton during alternating cycles. EMU reserves the right to move the off-campus cohort to main campus if the enrollment is fewer than 10 students. Those enrolled in courses below the level for adequate enrollment may either wait until there are more students at the off-campus site or they may shift to the EMU site to complete their coursework.
