R.N. to B.S.N. Completion Program

Eastern Michigan University's R.N. to B.S.N. completion program builds on previous learning to include additional material in health assessment, professionalism in nursing, nursing research, leadership/management and community health nursing. This program is designed for the nurse with the busy schedule. Program highlights include: nursing classes that meet one night a week, credit for previous course work, highly qualified faculty, the use of world-class health care agencies and affordable tuition.

Nursing Courses With a Clinical Placement
The program includes one course with clinical placements, (84 hours arranged with preceptors).

  • NURS 450/451 Community Health Nursing
    Clinical placements will be negotiated with the faculty, student and preceptor.

Career Opportunities
Registered nurses who received their initial nursing education in a diploma or associate-degree nursing school can successfully complete a B.S.N. degree, which will enhance their employment opportunities in areas that require a B.S.N. degree, such as community health, management/case management positions or entrepreneurial endeavors.

Required Number of Credits

  • 60 credits for nursing major
    • 23 nursing credits required at EMU
    • 37 credit hours from previous nursing program
  • 64 credits general education and support courses which may be transferred in to EMU

124 credit hours to graduate — 30 must be from EMU

Area I: Symbolics and Communication (14 to 15 credit hours)

  • ENGL 121 English composition (3)
  • CTAC 121 or CTAC 124 Fundamentals of Speech (2 to 3)
  • Advanced English composition, speech or a foreign language course (3 to 5) [ENGL 324 or 326 recommended]
  • Math reasoning course [MATH 170 or SOCL 250 recommended] (3)
  • Computer literacy course [IHHS 226 or INDT 201 recommended] (3)

Area II: Science and Technology

  • CHEM 120 Fundamentals of Organic and Biochemistry (4)
  • PSYC 101 General Psychology (3)
  • One of the following two-course sequences (6–8 hours)
    • SPMD 201 Human Anatomy for Sports Medicine (3)
    • SPMD 202 Human Anatomy for Sports Medicine (3) or
    • ZOOL 201 Anatomy and Physiology (4)
    • ZOOL 202 Anatomy and Physiology (4)

Area III: Social Science

  • PLSC 112 or PLSC 113 U.S. Government (3)
  • HIST 101, 102, 103, 106, 123 or 124 History (3)
  • SOCL 105 Introductory Sociology or ANTH 135 Introduction to Cultural Anthropology (3)
  • Specified second social science course [cross-cultural course recommended]

Area IV: Arts and Humanities

  • Literature course or advanced foreign language course
  • Second literature course, intermediate/advanced foreign language literature course, oral interpretation course or a cross-cultural or international studies course
  • A philosophy or religion course
  • An art, dance, music or theater arts course

Accreditation
EMU's R.N./B.S.N. program is approved by the Michigan State Board of Nursing, and the School of Nursing is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
