Jacquard Weaving
The Art Department of EMU along with Extended Programs and Educational Outreach offers a series of workshops in Jacquard Weaving. Focused around a 6-module electronic TC-1 loom, the program includes a two-day introductory workshop, followed by three longer workshops investigating a variety of weave structures essential to jacquard weave design. A loom rental program is also available providing additional loom access for those who have previously taken TC-1 Basics and at least one of the longer jacquard workshops.
TC-1 Basics (two-day workshop)
Learn how to prepare an image for weaving, how to assign weaves, and how to prepare a digital file for the loom. You’ll be provided with a selection of weaves to get started. Each person will work at a computer workstation with Photoshop and JacqCAD installed, and will have an opportunity to weave a small study piece. By the end of the weekend, you should have a much clearer understanding of what is involved in designing for a hand jacquard loom. Limit: Six students
A. Basics of image development
B. Preparing files for the loom
C. Controlling the TC-1 loom
D. Weaving a study piece
Introduction to Jacquard Weaving (nine day workshop)
Learn how to draft a set of compound weaves, and how to develop digital files suitable for weaving with several shuttles. The Introduction workshop will focus on 2-shuttle weftback weaves, the Advanced workshop on 4-shuttle turned tapestry weaves. Each person will work at a computer workstation with Photoshop and JacqCAD installed, and will have an opportunity to weave a small technical test as well as a larger study piece. By the end of each workshop, you should better understand some of the many possibilities for working with multi-shuttle compound weaves to realize your ideas. Limit: Six students
Please Note: TC-1 Basics is required before taking either of the longer workshops. The Introduction workshop is required before taking the advanced workshop.
