Graduate Certificate in Information Security

Turn information security into job security with an advanced technology certificate from Eastern Michigan University. The graduate certificate in information security is designed for those currently serving, or aspiring towards, management positions in legal fields, law enforcement, computer training and education, marketing or other areas concerned with information security-related issues, products and services. It can also serve a general educational role for individuals who want to become better decision-makers and more knowledgeable participants in legislative and ethical issues.

Through the program, you’ll gain an in-depth understanding of federal, state and international laws relating to:

  • Federal, state and international laws relating to information security cases and contemporary events;
  • Ethical issues of information collection, processing, storage and transmission;
  • Policies, procedures and plans that provide the foundation for a sound information security program;
  • Risks to the security of information, based on threats and vulnerabilities; establish security requirements for organizations to reduce risks and
  • Plans for comprehensive information security programs and documents necessary to implement and maintain programs.

The program’s courses are approved by the Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS), and mapped to 4011 and 4012 standards. The program will provide excellent preparation for the Computer Information System Security Professional (CISSP) exam and the Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) exam. And, if you later decide to pursue a full master's degree, you can apply 13 credit hours to the master of liberal studies program in interdisciplinary technology.

The information security field itself is now a necessity for all companies and organizations. The graduate certificate in information security can open doors for career advancement in one of the fastest growing professions within the information technology industry. The certificate provides professionals with the knowledge and tools to participate in a team based information security or protection program in larger organizations and to initiate and manage programs in smaller organizations.

This certificate is completed with 17–18 hours of graduate coursework. Coursework required for the program's

  • IA 522 Physical Security Requirements Information Systems (2)
  • IA 532 Audit Controls in Information Security (2)
  • IA 542 Information System Security for Managers (3)
  • IA 543 Systems Operating Environment for Information Security Systems Administrators (2)
  • IA 544 Administrative Information Security Procedures (2)
  • IA 546 Vulnerability, Risk and Analysis (2)
  • IA 694 Professional Seminar in Information Assurance (2)
  • Elective ISEC Special Topics: Restricted elective course to be determined in consultation with program adviser (2)

* In order to obtain the graduate certificate, an overall GPA of 3.0 is required.
