Special Education Director/Supervisor Approval Program

Eastern Michigan University offers the approval program fulfilling the requirements of the State of Michigan for employment of special education director or supervisor to oversee district’s special education programs. This program is offered in convenient formats in Washtenaw County. All EDLD courses may also be taken at the off-campus sites. Students who complete course requirements for supervisor and director approval may opt to complete an additional independent research project and comprehensive exams in fulfillment of a specialist degree.

Career Opportunities
The program is a good fit for professional educators who hold a Michigan Teaching Certificate and/or full credentials as a related services provider, have three years of successful experience in special education and are looking for career advancement into supervisory and director-level positions. Receive a recommendation for acceptance from a faculty member who advises students in the specialist program after a personal interview/consultation has occurred.

Accreditation
The EMU College of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the Council for Exceptional Children, and approved by the Michigan Department of Education for the preparation of special education personnel.

Number of Credits
The number of credit hours will be dependent upon the student’s previous graduate coursework,(i.e. a course in collaborative consultation and research techniques must have been taken).

Program of Study
In addition to having certification/licensure as a special education teacher, school social worker or other related services provider, students wanting to complete the supervisor only or supervisor and director of special education approval must be admitted into the Department of Special Education’s specialist degree program or the Department of Educational Leadership’s doctoral program.

An academic advisor will write a program of study based on a student’s prior coursework, current licensure credentials and career intent. The first lists of courses are required for supervisor approval. Additional courses are listed for director’s approval:
