Specialist of Arts in Educational Leadership*
The Specialist of Arts in Educational Leadership is a post-master's program for prospective and practicing educational leaders. The program may either provide advanced administration preparation for P–12 schools and institutions of higher education and/or the coursework that was previously required by the State of Michigan for administrative certification.*Note: The majority of the concentration and cognate courses are available off-campus and on weekends. Select core courses are only offered on campus.
Accreditation
The EMU College of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and approved by the Michigan Department of Education for the preparation of educational personnel.

Program of Study
The specialist's degree program requires a minimum of 32 credit hours beyond the master's degree. Students work closely with their advisers in developing a program of study that will prepare them for their career goals. Candidates for the specialist's degree in educational leadership must satisfactorily complete all work on the program of study. The requirements outlined below provide the basic course work required for the specialist.
If students are seeking administrative certification, additional courses will be required. A program of study may be developed to fulfill requirements for Michigan's voluntary school administrative certification and central office endorsement upon approval by the program adviser.
A. Completion of a master's degree in educational leadership or a relevant area.
B. Concentration Area: 16 hours
- EDLD 710 Leadership Theory (3)
- EDLD 714 Data-Driven Decision Management for Leaders (3)
- EDLD 740 Organizational Theory (3)
- Seven hours of core educational leadership courses. These courses in educational leadership are selected with approval of the student's adviser and reflect the professional needs and objectives of each individual student.
- EDPS 621 Statistical Applications in Educational Research (2)
- EDLD 713 Field-Based Research (4)
- EDLD 787–789 Internship in Educational Administration (2–4)
D. Cognates: 6 hours
These courses are elected from either educational leadership or other areas and should complement the student’s career goals. Several additional cognates will be added if students are seeking the initial administrator certification.
E. Culminating Experience
The culminating experience for the specialist's degree is a review and presentation of the student's field-based research study and the student’s internship experiences as set forth in his or her internship plan. This review and presentation will be conducted by the director of the intern program and the director of the field-based research study and will be scheduled during the student's last semester in the program.

- EDLD 787–789 Internship (2–4) Information is available from the director of the intern program. Internship placements should be arranged at least one semester in advance. Download the internship handbook.
- EDLD 713 Field-based Research (4) This course is only offered in the winter and summer terms. Department permission is required in advance.
- Off-campus course offerings. The majority of the concentration and cognate courses for the specialist's degree are available off-campus and on weekends. Typically, three to four applied research courses are only available on campus in the evening.
